Martin Clunes hit our screens in January 2025 as Nathan Williams, a Welsh farmer grappling with threats from local county lines gangs. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Welsh countryside, the six-part ITV1 drama, Out There, combines gritty storytelling with the realities of rural farming life.

The series was directed by Marc Evans – renowned for Welsh dramas Steeltown Murders and The Pembrokeshire Murders – and proudly supported by us here at Creative Wales. The drama not only highlights Wales’ potential as a top filming location but also showcases local talent, both on and off-screen.

Read on to explore the stunning locations, skilled crew, and enthusiastic trainees who helped bring Out There to life. Plus, find out how we can support your next production in Wales.

Where was ITV’s Out There filmed?

The Welsh-made drama was filmed across rural Mid-Wales with our support. While this beautiful region is often overshadowed by the more popular filming locations in Southeast Wales, Out There helped highlight its potential as a stunning backdrop for TV and film productions.

The drama showcases a mix of rarely seen locations across the Black Mountains and the charming villages and towns of Crickhowell, Llangattock, Llyswen and Llandovery. Alongside these picturesque rural spots, filming also took place in some of Wales’ bustling towns cities, such as Newport, Port Talbot, Swansea and Cardiff.

Some interior scenes were also filmed at Dragon Studios – a leading film and TV studio located on the outskirts of Cardiff near Bridgend. The site features five purpose-built studios spread across 100 acres, making it an ideal location for productions looking to film in Wales.

Paul ‘Bach’ Davies [LINK: to Paul’s article], an experienced location manager with over 30 years in the industry, worked on Out There. He says, ‘I loved being a part of Out There. For me, the main challenge was to find the two main locations, which were the main character’s farm and the neighbouring farm. They had to be in the same valley where you could see one from the other.

We ended up finding our main location in Llangattock, and then the other farm was in Llyswen, which is about 50 minutes away. With the magic of television and editing, they sewed them together to look like the farms were opposite each other."

Meet the cast and crew of Out There

Alongside Martin Clunes, the cast of Out There featured Louis Ashbourne Serkis as Clunes’ son, as well as a number of talented Welsh stars, including Mark Lewis Jones, who won a Bafta Cymru for Best Actor in The Passing / Yr Ymadawiad; Carly-Sophia Davies, in her first major role; and Gerran Howell, who previously played the title role in CBBC’s Young Dracula.

Behind the scenes, the production created lots of job opportunities in the region – with the crew itself made up of 68% locally-sourced professionals, as well as offering valuable opportunities for emerging creatives. As part of our continued commitment to nurturing and supporting the next generation of professionals working in Wales’ film and TV industry, the ITV1 production provided paid placements for 14 new entry-level trainees. These placements added up to 126 weeks of hands-on experience across various production departments, including sound, camera, make up and locations.

Beyond apprenticeships and trainee placements, the production also got the local community involved. Schoolchildren were invited to the set for a behind-the-scenes look at life on a production, while short-term work experience opportunities were offered to two individuals hoping to kickstart their careers in film and TV.
