Wales is increasingly recognised for producing high‑quality, culturally distinctive film and TV. Behind the camera, Welsh filmmakers supported by funding, partnerships and a growing network of production talent are driving a new wave of 'made in Wales' films that resonate with audiences at home and internationally. 

From securing film funding and attracting distributors to navigating international film festivals, the journey for Welsh filmmakers is complex, making targeted industry support essential.

At Creative Wales we work closely with partners including Ffilm Cymru Wales and S4C and BBC to strengthen the Welsh film industry. The funding programmes we support, such as the Feature Film Development Fund and the Welsh‑language development programme Sinema Cymru help nurture talent, develop original stories and bring Welsh‑language content to the big screen.

Recent projects we've supported such as Mr Burton, Madfabulous, Effi o Blaenau and Lluest, show how this investment is helping Welsh stories reach global audiences. With a run of BAFTA nominations for Welsh films, two major Welsh features hitting cinemas this summer, and About a Bell and Lluest recognised among Screen Daily’s “20 UK buzz titles” at Cannes 2026, there’s never been a better time to spotlight the films and filmmaking talent shaping Wales’ film industry.

Released in June 2026, Madfabulous premiered at BFI Flare, Europe’s biggest LGBTQIA+ film festival. This vibrant Welsh film tells the true story of flamboyant aristocrat Henry Paget, 5th Marquess of Anglesey, and stars Callum Scott Howells and Rupert Everett. Filmed across Anglesey, Caernarfon and Pwllheli, the production received support from the Ffilm Cymru Wales Feature Film Production Fund and created six trainee opportunities locally. Directed by Anglesey‑born Celyn Jones.

A highly anticipated Welsh‑language adaptation of Gary Owen’s Iphigenia in Splott, Effi o Blaenau has already been recognised as a standout at Glasgow Film Festival. Directed by Marc Evans and set against the dramatic landscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the film stars rising talent Leisa Gwenllian. Part‑financed by Creative Wales and developed with S4C, the film created five trainee placements and will be released in cinemas on 19 June before broadcasting on S4C, S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer

Mr Burton is a Welsh‑made biopic exploring how Richard Jenkins a working‑class boy from Pontrhydyfen, became the iconic actor Richard Burton, guided by teacher and mentor Philip Burton. Directed by Marc Evans and starring Harry Lawtey and Toby Jones, the film is backed by BBC Wales, Ffilm Cymru Wales and us at Creative Wales.

Philippa Lowthorpe’s BAFTA‑nominated H is for Hawk is a Ffilm Cymru Wales feature, filmed in Wales with our backing. Based on Helen Macdonald’s memoirs and produced by John Giwa‑Amu. Starring Claire Foy, the film follows Helen’s journey through grief and her unexpected bond with a hawk named Mabel.

Produced by Jasper Warry of Hello Deer Studios, Simon Callow’s comedy‑drama stars Omid Djalili and follows an unlikely friendship sparked by the demolition of a parish church. Supported by the Ffilm Cymru Wales Feature Film Production Fund, the film was named one of Screen Daily’s “20 UK buzz titles” at Cannes 2026.

This Welsh‑language Western, starring Aimee‑Ffion Edwards and Rhodri Meilir, is the first feature to progress from Sinema Cymru,  the Welsh‑language film development partnership between Creative Wales, S4C and Ffilm Cymru Wales. Recently wrapped at Great Point Studios in Cardiff, the film received production funding from Creative Wales.

Inspired by Dylan Thomas’ much‑loved short story, this international production stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta‑Jones, directed by Huw Penrallt Jones. Filmed in Dolgellau and at Aria Studios on Anglesey, the film has already secured international distribution and received support from the Ffilm Cymru Wales Feature Film Production Fund.

Gareth Evans, director of HAVOC, returns to Wales for Amazon MGM Studios’ reimagining of the 1960s Yakuza thriller. Produced by Ed Talfan of Severn Screen, the film is expected to land on Prime Video in late 2026 with our support.
